Boosting Bandwidth and Reliability with Industrial Ethernet Switch Link Aggregation  

As industrial networks continue to handle growing volumes of real-time data, the need for higher bandwidth and seamless communication has become critical With the advent of modern automation systems, SCADA systems, and industrial IoT applications, there is an increasing reliance on Ethernet networks for uninterrupted data communications between devices, controllers and system Under these circumstances, link aggregation has come to be viewed as a highly effective means of improving network performance as well as reliability in industrial Ethernet networks. 

In industrial Ethernet networks, Link aggregation combines multiple physical Ethernet connections into a single logical link., thus not only improving network bandwidth but also ensuring network reliability by providing redundancy in case a link fails. 

Understanding Link Aggregation in Industrial Networks: 

The Link aggregation is implemented by combining two or more Ethernet connections between two network devices, such as switches or controllers, into a single logical link. The data is then distributed across these links., effectively it will increase g the link capacity while maintaining deterministic communication characteristics. 

Link aggregation different from simply increasing capacity by adding cables, as it is implemented at the switch level, built on standardized protocols to efficiently manage traffic distribution and the switching. This is particularly critical in industrial environments, where even brief downtime or data loss can be detrimental to overall operations. 

Why Link Aggregation is Important in Industrial Ethernet Networks? 

In industrial settings, it is common requiring deterministic data transmission with multiple devices at any given time. As system complexity increases, a single Ethernet link may not be enough to meet these needs. Link aggregation is a solution to this problem, as it provides expanded capacity without requiring a full redesign of the network infrastructure. 

One of the most important advantages of link aggregation is its capability to enhance reliability If a failure should take place in one of the physical links, data is still communicated over the other links.

  • Improved network availability 

Link Aggregation Technologies: 

The industrial ethernet switches typically support standardized link aggregation protocols to support seamless integration between devices of different manufacturers. The most popular protocol is the IEEE 802.3ad protocol, also known as LACP (Link aggregation control protocol). 

The LACP protocol enables automatic detection of aggregated links, reducing the chance of incorrect configuration. In managed industrial Ethernet switches, link aggregation may be supported combined with redundancy protocols. 

Typical Applications of Link Aggregation: 

In industrial networks requiring high data throughput, link aggregation is commonly applied.  

It is best applied in backbone connections between switches, control rooms, and data aggregation points. 

Common use cases include; 

  • Industrial backbone and core networks 
  • SCADA and control system interconnections 
  • High-resolution machine vision systems 
  • Data-intensive IIoT and edge computing deployments 

Link Aggregation vs Redundancy Protocols: 

Although protocols such as RSTP or MRP are mainly designed to maintain network availability, link aggregation provides redundancy and additional bandwidth. These protocols are combined in industrial networks to provide the largest level of redundancy and scalability. 

While link aggregation is concerned with the performance of the network, redundancy protocols are concerned with the changes or failures in the network topology.
